Developer humor has genres
Spend enough time in engineering channels and the categories separate themselves. There is deploy-day superstition, which is really just risk management wearing a costume. There is code-review humor, which is how teams talk about power without talking about power. There is the environment joke — works on my machine — which is the oldest one and still undefeated. Why most of it does not survive printing
A joke that kills in Slack usually dies on cotton, because a shirt gets one beat and no context. No thread, no reply, no screenshot for reference. So the ones that make it are the ones that compress: Token Quota Exceeded works because the system-log framing carries the whole setup, and Agent Needs a Leash works because you either run agents in production or you do not, and both audiences get it instantly.
The distance test
